Descriptions for Winter 2021 STEAMKids® School Holiday Workshops
  • * Reaction Distraction
6 - 10 years Let's head back to the lab as this workshop for the budding chemist is all about obtaining a reaction. We'll mix materials and combine substances as we start the process of understanding the chemical world. Each experiment will have a reaction not too miss, so don't get distracted. Hands-on, home-made, chemistry that will leave inquiring minds wanting more!
  • Brick Bending Lego
6 - 12 years Take brick building to another level in this workshop as we master techniques for building curves, arches, circles, and other non-standard creations. Whether you are a beginner with Lego or a black-belt builder, you will surely leave with new ideas for use with your own Lego collections.
  • Circus Magic
4 - 7 years Roll up, Roll up! Welcome to the Big Top Magic show. There will be tricks to learn, illusions to master, and a whole lot of laughs. We'll practice the art of misdirection, understand the craft of trickery, and create a show that will have you wanting more. What are you waiting for? Step into the ring and give it a go.
  • Collage & Keep
5 - 10 years Create an original artwork inspired by the illustrations of Eric Carle. We'll make our own special papers with marks and paints. We'll draw, cut and stick and create unique collages to keep.
  • Geared up Gadgets
5 - 10 years Good gadgets have got gears. Great gadgets have geared up gears! If you feel like you have a bolt loose in your head scratcher, do not fear. We'll understand the baics, then create our geared-up gadgets. Sounds simple, but gears are tricky to master, so get ready for a meshing-good time!
  • Geology Rocks Minecraft
6 - 12 years If you have rocks on your mind, then look no further! If you choose to dive into this newly-spawned workshop, you will discover why Minecraft has chosen the pallet of blocks they offer! We'll search for the similarities between the game world and real world, talk of terrain, break-down biomes, and create some curious creations. What are you waiting for? Set your spawn-point and away we go!
  • Gotta Catch 'Em All
5 - 10 years If you want to be the very best, you need to have the right materials. If you want to catch 'em all, you need to think about all the angles. Come along to design and build a catching contraption for our favourite little pocket monsters. Once you have mastery of the machine, you will have everything you need to catch more!
  • Heroes of the Night
4 - 7 years It's dangerous at night and we need heroes and heroines to save the streets. Just pull on your mask and you are ready to go! We'll develop our hero character, decide on special abilities, activate our special powers, and jump into action. Come dressed in your PJ's and get ready to shout "hooray" because in the night we save the day!
  • Home Tweet Home
4 - 7 years Bird houses to design and make. The birds in the city are without a place to call home. We'll come to their rescue. Find out about the birds that live in the city and where they like to live. Design and build your very own birdhouse. You'll get to take it home to bring birds into your backyard.
  • Impression Sunrise
12 - 17 years There's colour in the sky; reds, yellows, deep purples, pinks and oranges. We are going to capture it with paint. This workshop is an introduction to watercolour techniques. Learn about mixing and applying watercolour paints in surprising ways. You'll have a finished artwork to take home.
  • Lego Mountain Masterpiece
8 - 14 years Whether you are a beginner, or blackbelt builder, you will add new skills to your toolbox in this Lego workshop of mountainous proportions. Mine, or bunker? Tunnel, or home? You decide as you add your own detail to the Lego Mountain Masterpiece.
  • Little Flower Shoppe
4 - 7 years Welcome to our little Flower Shoppe. It sells the most amazing flowers. This is a classic art and craft based workshop making all things floral. We'll craft daisy chains, make paper posies and paint a floral artwork. Come in and shop.
  • Longstitch: Hoop Art
10 - 17 years Tapestry embroidery using an open canvas grid. Choose your design and your favourite colours, then learn some stitches. Mount your finished artwork into a 6” embroidery hoop ready for hanging.
  • Makers Workshop: Over the Rainbow
4 - 7 years Calling all makers and those who like to tinker. There’ll be bits and bobs in all the colours of the rainbow. What will you make? Drill and glue. Bend and twist. Snip, stick and paint. Have fun safely exploring the possibilities.
  • Mars Mission
5 - 10 years Hold on to your hats, we're off to the red planet, '4th rock from the sun! We’ll look at pictures sent back by NASA probes, and create a replica Martian landscape with mountains, craters, canyons, and deserts. We'll also need to build machines so we can explore Mars and get around. Games, space ships, aliens, and a lot of fun in a workshop that's out of this world!
  • Master Detective
6 - 12 years Do you think you have what it takes to solve a multi-layered puzzle? Come along and practice the art of the detective as we use some of the tools of the trade and find the hidden clues. We'll interview the suspects, comb the scene, and train our eyes to join the dots and solve the crime. See you at the scene.
  • Minibot Mayhem
5 - 10 years Are you ready to take on the minibot challenge? In this workshop, where minibots rule, we will work in teams to complete 3 very different coding challenges with 3 very different minibots. The trick will be to identify the similarities that make the coding of different models easier. Can you solve the challenge?
  • Monkey Mayhem
4 - 7 years Nothing causes more mayhem than a monkey making a mess! There will be songs, games, stories, and more monkey mania than you can muster. One thing is for sure, Monkeys make marvellous mates!
  • Outback Engineer
4 - 7 years The Aussie outback is one of the toughest landscapes in all the world. Roads and bridges, bores and mines, the Engineers have made it all work in the harshest conditions. How do you beat the searing heat? What do you do if it rains? and Is there time for fun? We'll answer these questions and more as we learn what it takes to be an Outback Engineer.
  • Painting the Universe
8 - 14 years Inspired by NASA photos of planets, moons, stars, galaxies, and more. Explore the possibilities of acrylic paints. Create a variety of textures with brushes and palette knives to paint up 2 artworks.
  • Power House
6 - 12 years If you are interested in harnessing our natural resources and moving towards a more sustainable way of living? Well, that's what the Power House has in store for any who dare to dream. Construction materials and methods, energy sources, and a renewable future are all in your hands. Come and build a power house, then light it up.
  • Press & Preserve
6 - 12 years Pressing and preserving flowers to use in your projects is lots of fun. Make your own timber flower press. We'll dye the timber and paint it with a design of your choice. Includes some ideas for using your pressed flowers.
  • Retro Design and Draw
8 - 14 years A funky art drawing workshop. Classic scooters, bikes, and cars will inspire in this retro drawing class. Learn about proportion and perspective when drawing objects. Add colour with inks and markers. There will be something for everyone.
  • Small World Terrarium
8 - 14 years Craft your own fully contained small world inside a glass container. Design to your chosen theme. Learn about balance and scale. Build a tiny stone structure. Add moss, rocks and plants. Includes instructions on taking care of your terrarium.
  • Spring Sparkle
4 - 7 years Art and craft for those makers who like sparkle. With a colourful Spring theme we'll create a sparkly canvas artwork. This will include some open ended activities, and is perfect for those who like to use a wide variety of shiny and sparkly materials.
  • The Artist's Garden
6 - 12 years A drawing and painting workshop full of inspiration from the artist's garden. Look at artworks by Vincent Van Gough and Claude Monet. Learn about hatching and stippling and render a detailed drawing with pencil and markers. Make a beautiful painting of the artist's garden to take home.
  • The House the Fairies Built
4 - 7 years New houses are needed for the fairy folk. Fairy builders and engineers are wanted. There'll be tools to use, sticks and stones to gather, and moss and leaves to collect. We'll design and build our whimsical dwellings, then fill them with furniture for cute little fairies we've made ourselves. The fairies will love them.
  • Watercolour Botanicals
10 - 15 years Art using watercolour techniques with a botanical theme. Drawing using pressed specimens and photos as reference will be explored. Techniques will be developed in using watercolour paints, Ecoline markers and water pens. Some experimental watercolour techniques will be explored.
* Workshop contains a food ingredient (not necessarily for eating, but for experiments or artwork also) and may not be suitable for children with food allergies.
