Art Discovery class for Grade 3 to Grade5
Relaxed and encouraging, developing skills in the Visual Arts. Art Discovery 2019

Students from Grade 3 to Grade 5 will love Art Discovery!

Classes are relaxed and encouraging, as kids are developing their interest and skills in the visual arts. Students will be introduced to a variety of tools, media and techniques.

In an Art Discovery class the teacher acts as guide as the kids experiment and progressively learn skills and techniques. Art Discovery kids are developing confidence in their drawing while learning about organising their ideas and projects.

A typical class could see us sketching, etching and making prints as we explore the properties of watercolour. Or we could mix and make 15 shades of green for a rainforest painting, then search pictures to find colours in the shadows. We could create a 3D image, and learn about presenting our work for others to appreciate.

This class is all about building skills in the visual arts, confidence in each child's own ability, and creating some artworks each child can be proud of.

How many children are enrolled in a class?

There are 10 places available to be booked in each time slot. We also reserve two additional spaces that may be booked by students who have missed a lesson on another day.

We offer a total of 60 places each term in our Art Discovery age group.

What age is Art Discovery for?

Children must be attending Grade 3, 4 or 5 (or homeschool equivalent) in 2019 to enrol in this class (the majority of children will be between 9 and 11 years of age). As we begin using oils, sprays and stencil knives in this age group, we will not enrol any students younger than Grade 3 into this class.

How is the class structured?

The class will begin with a 10 minute observational drawing exercise, before moving on to a variety of different art projects that fit with out weekly theme. We use the full 45 minutes for art activities, children do not do any set up, pack up or wash up in our art classes.

Each week the students will work on projects that build a portfolio of work. Portfolios will go home with the students at the end of each term.

My child is only interested in drawing/sketching, is this the right program for them?

Absolutely! Would you believe this is the most common question for our upper primary / early high school age classes?

At this age students often love to get really good at one thing (much like an instrumental student who just loves to play the same song over and over!). Most often we find this to be drawing, as these are the art resources that the majority of students have easy access to at home or school, and tend to have the most experience with. You may notice the same character / drawing / animal/ landscape repeated across many, many artworks.

While this repetition is fantastic at building both skill and confidence, it sometimes makes it a little bit challenging for students to try out a different type of art making. And this is what makes the art program at Flying Fox Studios so unique! The introduction to a wide variety of media by designing projects that will maintain confidence while at the same time building new abilities. Easy builds confidence, challenging builds skills, and a great program offers a balance of both.

Your child's focus on one particular area will often flourish when they discover the wide world of visual art. As they grow in their knowledge of different types of art media such as inks, charcoal, graphite, paints, pastels and papers their artworks will gain new depth. They will grow, layer upon layer, what they already love with new skills, tips, tricks, and techniques they have gained from our fabulous and experienced teachers.

A Guide to Enrolment

All classes at Flying Fox Studios are run on an opt-in basis for every new term or unit. All places are offered on a first come, first served basis, each term. Current students need to re-enrol to secure a spot for the following term. Do the popularity of certain age groups, some classes will fill very quickly when a new enrolment period opens.

We also do offer a free trial class. A free trial booking does not reserve a spot in a class for the term. We recommend students interested in this age group attend a trial class in the term prior to the one they wish to enrol into (i.e come along for a trial lesson in Term 3, with a view to enrolling early when bookings open for Term 4). Free trial classes must be booked through out office.

Students must meet the correct age / grade requirements for enrolling in a class at Flying Fox Studios. Students enrolling in Art Discovery during 2019 must be attending Grades 3, 4 and 5 in 2019. This is our standard policy across all classes, programs, and age groups. Students that are Grade 3 age, but attending Grade 2 in 2019 will be able to enrol into this age group in 2020. This is a firm policy, and out of age enrolments will not be accepted.
