Art class for Grade 6 to Grade 9
Environment of guided experimentation and instruction. Term 3, 2019
Unit: Lost & Found

From Grade 6 to Grade 8 students are maturing, allowing for increasing levels of skill using art media and tools.

Art Keys classes are relaxed and fun, while students learn techniques and gain new skills as they progress through each unit. In an environment of guided experimentation and instruction students will cover a wide variety of experiences in the visual art area.

Learning from other artist’s work and developing their own ideas, Art Keys students learn and grow skills in drawing and sketching, using a range of media such as graphite, aquarelle pencils, charcoal, inks and pastels.

Painting is explored using oils, acrylics, mixing mediums, chalk pastels, as well as mixed contemporary mediums.

This class is designed to inspire, challenge, develop skill, and keep art fun. Over the term a wide variety of materials will be used, many of which children have not used before. Experimentation is encouraged!  As well as lessons including elements of drawing and painting, we will also discover printmaking, sculpture, clay work, mixed media, and many more.

How many children are enrolled in a class?

There are 10 places available to be booked in each time slot. We also reserve two additional spaces that may be booked by students who have missed a lesson on another day. We offer a total of 50 places each term in our Art Keys age group.

What age is Art Keys for?

Children must be attending Grade 6, 7 or 8 (or homeschool equivalent) in 2019 to enrol in this class (the majority of children will be between 12 and 14 years of age).

How is the class structured?

The class will begin with a 10-15 minute observational drawing exercise, before moving on to a variety of different art projects that fit with out weekly theme. In this age group there will be some projects that carry over for 2 weeks. We use the full 60 minutes for art activities, students do not do any set up, pack up or wash up in our art classes.

Each week the students will work on projects that build a portfolio of work. Portfolios will go home with the students at the end of each term.

My child is only interested in drawing/sketching, is this the right program for them?

Absolutely! Would you believe this is the most common question for our upper primary / early high school age classes?

At this age students often love to get really good at one thing (much like an instrumental student who just loves to play the same song over and over!). Most often we find this to be drawing, as these are the art resources that the majority of students have easy access to at home or school, and tend to have the most experience with. You may notice the same character / drawing / animal/ landscape repeated across many, many artworks.

While this repetition is fantastic at building both skill and confidence, it sometimes makes it a little bit challenging for students to try out a different type of art making. And this is what makes the art program at Flying Fox Studios so unique! The introduction to a wide variety of media by designing projects that will maintain confidence while at the same time building new abilities. Easy builds confidence, challenging builds skills, and a great program offers a balance of both.

Your child's focus on one particular area will often flourish when they discover the wide world of visual art. As they grow in their knowledge of different types of art media such as inks, charcoal, graphite, paints, pastels and papers their artworks will gain new depth. They will grow, layer upon layer, what they already love with new skills, tips, tricks, and techniques they have gained from our fabulous and experienced teachers.

A Guide to Enrolment

All classes at Flying Fox Studios are run on an opt-in basis for every new term or unit. All places are offered on a first come, first served basis, each term. Current students need to re-enrol to secure a spot for the following term. Do the popularity of certain age groups, some classes will fill very quickly when a new enrolment period opens.

Our enrolment policy enables students to change class days and times between terms if needs be, new students to join a class, students to move up an age group in between terms, as well as enabling students to take a term off, without losing their place for the year.

We appreciate this policy may not suit everyone's preferences, however after many years of experience, and much consideration we believe this is the best, and fairest, policy for all out students. Thank you for your understanding.

We do offer a free trial class. A free trial booking does not reserve a spot in a class for the term. We recommend students interested in this age group attend a trial class in the term prior to the one they wish to enrol into (i.e come along for a trial lesson in Term 3, with a view to enrolling early when bookings open for Term 4). Free trial classes must be booked through out office.
