Term 1, 2020
Unit: Once Upon a Time

In a Scribblers art class children who are 2 to 4 years of age (and their carer) are able to experience all the excitement of a creative art class with lots of active, and often messy fun.

In our creative children's art studio, we will draw, paint, cut, paste, thread, stamp, print, model with clay, and lots more. In a class you could see us flying, slithering or stomping, then painting, making a mask or threading beads onto a caterpillar.

This class is suitable for children after they have turned 2 years of age, right up until children are 4 years 11 months of age.  Scribblers is a also fun way for siblings to enjoy a class together, and we find many parents will attend the class with siblings. We recommend a ratio of one carer for up to three children.

Scribblers is part of the Australian designed ZoomArt program that introduces children to media, tools and experiences in the visual arts. We use stories, games and drama to complement the term’s theme and to provide a stimulating interactive setting.

Progressively and intentionally builds skills in an environment of guided experimentation, encouragement and play.

Our Saturday Scribblers class is run as a Scribblers / Zoomers combined class, due to the fact we have no Zoomers class running on the weekend. Children 5 years (but not yet at school) are welcome to join our Saturday program

What to expect when attending a Scribblers class?

Typically 2 to 4 year old children are experiencing new things each day. They are learning to master skills of all kinds as they learn to "do it myself". A scribblers class is a great mix of letting children learn to complete tasks on their own, and keeping their adult close at hand should they need a bit of extra hands on help.

Scribblers classes include lots of art, craft, painting, stamping, drawing, sensory exploration, story telling, games, imagination, creativity and hands on fun.

Each week the lesson will begin with a mat exploration time, with a prop for kids to touch and explore. This will set the scene for our class. We will then move to our 'wet' task at our tables, then usually back to the mat for a short story time. We then move to a craft or dry project (sticking, threading, cutting etc) that kids can immediately take home. All wet tasks are collected the following week.

A Scribblers class gives a platform for meaningful language development and a conversation between the child and their carer. New words are shared and help given and received.

Scribblers classes offer a supportive framework where your child and their carer can be introduced to a new class environment, in a fun and relaxed way.

We find most children take 2 to 3 weeks to settle into a new environment, learn the class routine and feel a little bit more relaxed when talking to a new grown up. They are learning to socialise with children and adults they may not have met before, sharing a space, resources, and a time frame with others. A new place will become more familiar with each visit.

How many children in a Scribblers class? Scribblers offers up to 8 regular spots in a class each term. Classes may also occasionally have up to 2 extra students attending as a make up lesson from another day.

Who teaches our Scribblers classes?

This year we have three wonderfully talented and inspiring facilitators for our Scribblers classes. Marnie takes our Monday and Wednesday classes, Mike leads our Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday classes, and Janet leads our Saturday morning session.

Can I bring a younger sibling? We welcome siblings in all our classes at Flying Fox Studios in age groups that have adults attend with a child. Please keep in mind that our art classroom will have toddler accessible items such as floor level hand washing water, paints, scissors etc that are out and accessible for students in class to access.
