Calling all young artists in Years 3, 4 and 5. Art Discovery is designed for children who love to draw, paint and create, and who are ready to move beyond step-by-step projects into a class that builds real, lasting art skills. In Art Discovery, students learn by doing. Each week focuses on developing strong foundations through hands-on exploration, guided practice and creative problem-solving. Students work with a wide range of materials including drawing media, paint, printmaking tools and mixed media, while being supported by experienced teachers who encourage confidence, independence and personal style. This class isn’t just about making art that looks the same as everyone else's - it’s about growing as an artist. Whether you're fine-tuning drawing skills or taking a few creative risks students are building skills every week. Over the term, students build confidence, develop their own artistic voice and create a body of work that reflects real progress as an artist. How many children are enrolled in a class? There are 10 places available to be booked in each time slot. We also reserve two additional spaces that may be booked by students who have missed a lesson on another day. We offer a total of 60 places each term in our Art Discovery age group. What age is Art Discovery for? Students in this class must be attending Grade 3, 4 or 5 (or homeschool equivalent) in 2026 to enrol in this class. How is the class structured? A typical class begins with a short observational drawing exercise. Students draw directly from objects in front of them, practising skills such as proportion, curves, shadows, depth and volume. These drawing skills are revisited every week and form the backbone of the program. From there, students move into a longer weekly project designed to build specific techniques. One week might involve creating a detailed painting, built carefully layer by layer. Another week could focus on colour theory, mixing and blending multiple shades to capture the depth and variation of a rainforest or landscape scene. Projects change regularly, but the focus is always on skill development rather than copying a single outcome. My child mainly loves drawing/sketching. Is this the program for them? Absolutely. In fact, this is one of the most common questions we’re asked for our upper primary and early high school classes. At this age, many students love to focus on one favourite skill and really build confidence with it. Drawing is often that starting point, simply because it’s familiar and accessible at home and school. You might notice your child returning to similar subjects or styles again and again, and that’s a wonderful thing. Repetition is how strong skills and creative confidence are built. At Flying Fox Studios, we use that confidence as a launchpad. Drawing and sketching remain an important part of our programs, while students are gently introduced to a broader range of materials and techniques in ways that feel achievable and exciting. Projects are carefully designed so students feel successful, while still being encouraged to stretch, experiment and try something new. A great art program balances comfort and challenge. Familiar skills help students feel confident, and new materials help them grow. As students explore inks, charcoal, graphite, paints, pastels and specialist papers, their drawing skills don’t disappear. Instead, they deepen. Layer by layer, students add new techniques, ideas and ways of working to the skills they already love. With guidance from our experienced teachers, many students find their artwork becomes more expressive, detailed and personal as they discover the wider world of visual art.

A Guide to Enrolment At Flying Fox Studios, we carefully structure our classes to suit specific age and grade groups. To ensure the best experience for all students, enrolment in Art Discovery for 2026 is strictly for children attending Grades 3, 4, or 5 in 2026. This policy applies across all our programs, and we do not accept enrolments outside the designated age range. Our enrolment is based on a term commitment, meaning we do not offer fortnightly enrolment options. Trial Classes & Enrolment Timing We offer a free trial class, but please note that attending a trial does not reserve a spot for the term. If you are considering enrolling, we recommend booking a trial in the term prior to the one you wish to join (e.g., attend a trial in Term 3 if you’re interested in enrolling for Term 4). Trial classes must be booked through our office. Re-Enrolment & Class Availability All classes at Flying Fox Studios operate on an opt-in basis each term. Current students must re-enrol to secure their place for the following term, as we do not offer automatic re-enrolment. Due to the popularity of certain age groups, some classes fill very quickly. Art Discovery is one of our highest-demand classes, and spots typically fill soon after enrolments open at 7:30 am. To ensure fairness, we do not offer early or preferential enrolment - every student has four equal opportunities per year to enrol. We appreciate your understanding and look forward to welcoming your young artist to class! |
